Meet the Perfumer

Like the fragrances she creates, Parisian perfumer Caroline Dumur is something of a mystery, preferring to let her scents speak for themselves. Here, she shares what inspired her to create this sensual, romantic perfume.

Is there a place that evokes Once Upon A Garden for you?

It would surely be a garden, in the countryside. There’s a soft breeze and the grass is green and slightly humid under my feet.

What inspired you to create this scent?

I imagined someone walking barefoot on summer nights in a garden after the rain. The weather is mild and the night sky is studded with stars. It’s a natural moment that is full of serenity, with this sensual connection to the earth.

What is your favourite ingredient in the scent, and what makes it special?

Sweet pea is the star of the composition. It’s a flower that was discovered in the 17th century by a Sicilian monk, who loved it so much that he sent it to botanical institutions across Europe. Then a Scottish nurseryman cross-bred it and made the delightfully fragrant and coloured sweet pea that we know today. In perfumery, no oil nor absolute can be extracted from sweet pea, so we recreate it through rosy, flowery and dewy notes. The scent is green, slightly minty, vegetal and dewy.

What do the other ingredients bring to the scent?

Pink pepper brings a sparkling and dynamic note. Fresh and spicy, it provides vibration and verticality, an original way to introduce sweet pea. Regarding moss, it extends the idea of naturality and allows long-lasting and feminine sensuality. It’s also a nod to the Chypre structure, a masterpiece construction of perfumery that provides timeless elegance.

Who in your mind is the woman who wears this scent?

Anyone who wants to feel very feminine and close to nature. There’s something simultaneously serene and carefree about it.
